Elemental Astrology and Counseling

Welcome!

Thanks for your interest in counseling with me. Here you’ll find a bit about my approach to astrology and to counseling.

Astrology is an exquisite language whose insights help us to better know and understand ourselves through engaging with the cycles of our lives and the world around us. I avoid using it for limiting predictions, but rather for understanding, guidance, and as an impetus for evoking lasting change and transformation. I find it reliably offers direction and points the way to manifesting our potentials and living a more integrated  life, as well providing insight into challenges, relational needs, and the motivations and behaviors of others.

There are many ways to approach astrology. I see the birth chart as a map, like an x-ray, which points to aspects of our soul as well as our conditioning that we can learn to work with to support our highest intentions. I consider astrological work as a journey, which involves healing and releasing trauma and old patterning, facing wounds and fears, allowing in vulnerability and the light of self-love, and claiming and living from our authentic self. Some call this astro-therapy, or transformational astrology, but I’ve been doing this before these terms were coined.

A Portal for Change

We live in a time of great change on many fronts, an “unraveling,” which for some can evoke a degree of confusion or anxiety. With change comes a call for discernment, and often for letting go: of relationships, expectations, habits of being, and more. But in a time of intense change things are more “plastic” and fluid, hence there is greater opportunity to truly paint our lives—and our world—anew, both for our own good, and for the good of all beings.

Taking a look at our astrological map’s indications can inspire us to find the strength and inspiration to make shifts that we may have been preparing for, but of which we needed greater awareness. These shifts can require facing old issues with greater attentiveness, and letting go of outworn ways of being. This in turn allows us to claim our gifts and our calling, and see aspects of ourselves and our endeavors with new eyes—in effect, to step through a portal from an old way of being into a new one. Ideally, the changes we open to refine our capacity to be of service to life, and to the Earth.

Counseling Astrology

I like to combine both astrology and counseling. Astrology is a great adjunct to counseling, as the chart quickly deepens understanding of childhood wounds, recurring patterns or frustrations, and untapped skills and talents, and helps sync these up with windows of opportunity for healing or manifestation.  Equally important, the counseling container magnifies the power of astrology.

A simple one-sided astrology “reading” deepens when it becomes a collaborative undertaking, a process by which client and counselor together engage through intuition, feeling, mind, and body.  Outer life results are more readily gained when a client commits to a series of sessions, or regular periodic astrology-informed counseling check-ins, to support progress on indicated pathways of change.

Some Focal Points

In addition to the personal planets and their aspects, I like to focus on the karmic story as described by the Moon’s South and North Nodes. The South Node informs us of tools and gifts that come naturally to us, but which we are advised not to rest in throughout our lives, as we are called to grow into and embrace new qualities and experiences, expressed by our North Node, perhaps in a realm we are not yet accomplished in, but where we have work to do.

I also find value in focusing on the slower moving transpersonal planets, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. These signify our signature of trauma and genius (Uranus), our transcendent potential (Neptune), and our journey from powerlessness to regenerative power (Pluto).  I also spend time with Saturn, which points to where and how we need to take responsibility in the material plane (no small task, and a vital one) and Chiron, an asteroid indicating our capacity  for healing of self and others.

Dreamwork

Dreamwork is another tool I’ve used for decades, for it provides a different doorway to our unconscious urges, knowings, and passions.  Our dreams are our own unique and creative inner language through which we tell ourselves things we might know only dimly, if at all.

Like astrology, dreams tap into the realm of the archetypes, and bear messages from our unconscious that can help inform our outer lives if we can give them the space and respect they deserve.  As a dreamwork group facilitator for many years, I find dreams to be a uniquely insightful window into the soul.
